It enables verification of your products by marking them with small machine-readable markings such as alphanumeric codes, logos, graphics and DataMatrix codes. The great advantage of laser marking is its durability, as they are water and smudge resistant. Application example: Pharma & Chemistry – Counterfeit drugs. Danger to life and limb.

Hardly any other area of product piracy is as dangerous as drug counterfeiting. The enormous responsibility of pharmaceutical manufacturers towards their customers requires special care. For example, EU Regulation 2016/161 obliges pharmaceutical packaging to be marked in a way that prevents counterfeiting. The Anti-Counterfeiting Directive of the German Medicines Act (AMG) stipulates that since February 9, 2019, all prescription-only medicines for human use must be provided with additional security features and a device to detect possible tampering. The strict requirements in the Pharma & Chemistry sector are absolutely necessary, as the numbers of counterfeit medicines are tending to rise worldwide. The good news is that in Germany, at least the fewest medicines sold legally are counterfeit.

A closer look at drug counterfeiting:

Drugs sold in registered pharmacies are very safe thanks to strong protection efforts. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, there were a total of 38 cases of drug counterfeiting in legal distribution between 1996 and 2008 that affected Germany. Online mail order, which makes it easy to distribute counterfeit medicine, is a much bigger problem. The counterfeit drug business is lucrative – and life-threatening, because even medicines for HIV, depression and other serious illnesses are not safe from imitation.

Your customers’ trust is the most valuable asset to protect, especially in the area of prescription drugs. Since February 9, 2019, the so-called first-opening protection, e.g., by means of a hologram seal, also applies to these in addition to the individual package number. The protection can be additionally increased by a supplementary laser marking and effectively protect against reuse. This makes it clear to your customers that the product is unopened and therefore does not contain counterfeit medicines.
